ATLANTA (March 21, 2017) – Kelly Moten of Emporia State University is the 2017 WBCA Division II Player of the Year and headlines the 2017 WBCA Division II Coaches’ All-America team, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
Moten averages 17.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. She stands second for the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) in scoring (607) and assists (149). Under Moten’s leadership, the Hornets top the MIAA in scoring offense (77.5 points per game) and rebounding offense (44.1 per game) and defense (30.7). Emporia State holds eight, top-five positions in its league.
Moten was the MIAA Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, a unanimous First-Team All-MIAA selection and on the MIAA All-Defensive Team in 2017. She became the first player in MIAA history to earn All-Tournament honors four times. She was a five-time MIAA Player of the Week this season.
The WBCA presents the Player of the Year award annually to the top player in each of the six WBCA membership divisions (NCAA Divisions II, and III, NAIA, junior/community college and high school). The Player of the Year and the 10-member Coaches’ All-America team in each division are selected by a committee of WBCA member coaches in that division.
“The WBCA is pleased to name Kelly Moten as the 2017 WBCA NCAA Division II Player of the Year,” said Danielle Donehew, executive director of the WBCA. “Kelly has played an integral role in guiding her team to an extraordinary season and is very deserving of this distinguished honor. The WBCA applauds Kelly for her hard work, dedication and contributions to the game during the 2016-17 season.”
