Since 1986, USA TODAY and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association have sponsored a Division I Top 25 Poll. The Division II poll was added in 1995 with the Division III poll commencing in 1996. ESPN became a sponsor of the Division I poll prior to the 1998-99 season. Coaches who vote in each of the respective polls are members of the WBCA. Each week during the collegiate season, 31 coaches from various NCAA Division I institutions vote on the Top 25 Poll. The school finishing ranked No. 1 in the final USA TODAY/ESPN WBCA Coaches' Top 25 poll receives the coveted USA TODAY/ESPN WBCA Coaches' Trophy. The Division II poll is voted on by 28 coaches. Ten member coaches vote on the Division III Top 25 poll.
